Pushing the (White) Envelope

A while back I introduced you to “White I” and “White II”. They depicted my experience of having a vision and wanting to use materials that were unusual for me. I did not know, then, how the vision would come to fruition and, as artists are wont to do, I just jumped feet first, eyes wide open, trusting that somehow I would find the way. The experience was enriching; it showed me that my trust (in myself, the creative process, Someone up there?) was not misplaced. My idea was perfectly expressed with the materials I wanted to use.

Even better, “White I” and “White II” found a perfect home, together!

I now have “White III” to introduce to you. Here I bring stones that harmonize with the under-painting (what’s under the last white layer), bring a special interest to the center of the painting and enjoy the company of the occasional gold leaf.

I added a great many layers of white, tinted with off-brown paint that was immediately rubbed off, just enough to leave a soft brown/pinkish hue. I added different powders in gold and copper, interspersed everything with white, started all over again. At the end, I brought some whites back and did my best to leave them alone. It’s just so much fun to do this…hard to stop…hard to know when to leave it and go celebrate another birth.

“White III” is available.
